To put it mildly, The Matrix: Resurrections was an underwhelming film to cap the Matrix trilogy. The protagonists, aside from Neo (Keanu Reeves), were subpar, and the antagonist The Analyst (Neal Patrick Harris) was even more. Fringe Fiction has some ideas for a proper requel to The Matrix.
What The Matrix: The Requel needs:
- Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus. An obvious choice.
- Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity. Another obvious choice.
- Helmut Bakaitis reprises his role as the Architect for a cameo minimally.
- The Oracle needs to make a return. Again. As Mary Alice sadly passed in 2022.
- Change the story — at least from Resurrection which was underwhelming and distracting. Neo did not in any way needed to be part of that software company when he should have run solo all along — or at least head of his own company with those that were initially freed by the Architect at the end of The Matrix: Revolutions. It should involve Neo, Trinity and Morpheus rebuilding the Matrix with forces working against them. Perhaps another Agent Smith merged with artificial intelligence or a corrupted routine that escaped this seventh (?) deletion.
- Neo (Keanu Reeves) actually fighting instead of whatever he did in The Matrix: Resurrections. With John Wick, it is quite obvious he is still capable of handling some physical stunts.
- Telephones or cellular phones should still be the way to travel from the Matrix to the real-world. Not mirrors. Perhaps they could have included the plot device like cellular phone towers as limiters or range of cellular phones.
- A Matrix for the current generation complete with artificial intelligence. Or perhaps the next step in artificial intelligence as the intelligence builds the Matrix in its own image. Definitely not in the humans — or machines — best interest. The artificial intelligence can view the machines as essentially obsolete in the way the humans viewed the machines as servants without free will.
What do you think? Does The Matrix trilogy deserved better than The Matrix: Resurrection? What would you do for the requel?
