One of Fringe Fiction’s underrated horror movie series. It may have satisfied moviegoers in the early 2000s, but the landscape has changed and so have the horror movies. Admittedly, the horror movies, especially produced in the United States, have been disappointing recently to say the least for well over a decade. Anything remotely horror that has been good has been a movie in either the Saw or Conjuring universe. Horror has been best left to the international crew from South Korea, Japan and some parts of South America. Joy Ride trilogy is pretty good, given its simplicity. Joy Ride (2001) didn’t even show any killing, just simple scares and creepiness through conversation with Rusty Nails over the CB radio. It wasn’t until Joy Ride 3: Roadkill until Rusty Nails got personal.
What Joy Ride: The Requel needs:
- Ken Kirzinger can reprise his role as Rusty Nail
- Rusty Nail probably needs mentee of sorts in the requel. Fringe Fiction would opt for someone younger but probably still drives a truck.
- Definitely needs teens in the movie. With the current state of teen scares, it seems to be a limited cast to choose from, other than independents.
- What Joy Ride 3: Roadkill (2014) got right were the kills. What the original Joy Ride (2001) got right was the creepiness. What Joy Ride: The Requel needs is a subtle combination and balance of these two movies.
- The police officers need to be more aggressive. They can have one officer or couple that have been tracking Rusty Nails throughout the trilogy and ends up in the requel. This officer doesn’t need a lengthy introduction just a concise one. Someone like Mills (Brad Pitt) in Se7en would be great.
- Keep the killings trucker-related. This theme of killing is what made this series unique. It should remain that way.
These are some ideas that Fringe Fiction has jostled around for Joy Ride: The Requel. What do you think? Can you do better?
