[REC] is a Spanish horror movie in 2007 that had zombies, first-person news perspectives and some truly frightening moments. It was later rebooted in the United States as Quarantine in 2008.
Then the sequel to this movie as Quarantine 2: Terminal in 2011:
Overall, this horror series was underrated, particularly the Spanish versions. The first Quarantine and [REC] definitely deserve a requel. Whereas [REC] went somewhat the spiritual route with the zombies, the requel can perhaps do more. As we have already experienced a worldwide pandemic, a viral outbreak would be redundant as it has done in many zombie movies already.
For a proper requel, Fringe Fiction thinks it needs:
- Can be set in New Orleans or France. New Orleans can introduce voodoo as a contributor to the zombie element. Filming in France can introduce new elements with perhaps new zombies much like The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.
- Still keep the first-person, found footage elements with use of social media in real-time. Perhaps bring choices as part of an interactive movie.
- A single female lead role. The inclusion of entire groups in Quarantine 2: Terminal kind of took away the horror element — at least in the beginning.
- Perhaps include some criminal elements in the film as stalkers. Think more like the videogame Outcast where less than mentally healthy elements stalk the player.
- The cause can be from a common source such as contaminated water as part of a (government) test or terrorist activity. So when the movie begins, some of the people may have already been dosed and could potentially turn into zombies. Maybe it can also be contaminated food in combination with something else as we already are contending with food supply contamination and outbreaks of avian flu.
These are some ideas that Fringe Fiction has for a requel to [REC]. What do you think? Can you think of others? Please feel free to comment below.
