With the Artificial Intelligence conferences in full swing, now is the time to ponder how artificial intelligence will continue to evolve and where it will end up in a span of five to ten years. Fringe Fiction does have a few speculations.

First, the environmental impact will be enormous as artificial intelligence continues to evolve. It costs a lot of resources to manage artificial intelligence, and the draw on energy resources is huge. With President Donald Trump and seemingly other countries stepping back on environmentalism, it could boast well for the industry, but it could severely impact the environment to a point of no return.

Second, comes the guardrails with artificial intelligence. With President Donald Trump and others including Elon Musk seemingly on the bandwagon with deregulation, that could bode well with the advancements in artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs) as a whole. Even with conservative estimates at this point, a lot of white-collar jobs currently employed by humans will be removed. This may be a step forward as in previous generations, job generation included an escalation in education. Again, whether it is beneficial or detrimental to humanity that remains to be seen.

Lastly, comes the consumerism of artificial intelligence. It has already arrived in various implementations in consumer products ranging from Apple to Microsoft. In part or in whole, artificial intelligence has been integrated into our lives. From our choices in Netflix and Amazon to whether we download one application over another, the data has been recorded. Data mining has become the norm, Fringe Fiction would say, for several years now. Whether we explicitly chose to “intervene” and the impact it has, it appears to be minimal. Even with a class-action lawsuit, most of the internet-borne companies would shrug it off as a nuisance than something that could impact everyone.
