Over this sunny weekend in Philadelphia, Fringe Fiction watched a few good movies. First is Sinners. It is a bit of an unexpected film. More on that later. The recent Superman won’t win accolades but it does pay tribute to past Superman films and reigns in parts of the DC Universe. The last is Wake Up:
Sinners is an interesting musical-horror film about vampires and Southern folklore. It starts out as a tribute to the South and its racial atmosphere. About midway through the film, it changes into a horror film of sorts involving vampires and kind of plays out like From Dusk till Dawn for a good portion of the film. Michael B. Jordan played Smoke and Stack who are essentially bootleggers, but Miles Caton as Sammie Moore is actually the lead role of the entire film. Overall, a highly recommended film. Please be sure to stay for the post-credit scene where there is closure.
Superman (2025) is an interesting film. It does involve a lot of the cast from the DC Universe like Hawkgirl and Mr. Terrific. However, it was too discordant of a film in Fringe Fiction’s opinion. The final scenes involving the Ultraman clone is fairly reminiscent of past Superman films. Overall, worth a watch. Maybe not a second in Fringe Fiction’s opinion.
Wake Up: Stories from the Front Lines of Suicide Prevention is something that is close to Fringe Fiction’s heart. It details four stories revolving around suicide and how families and partners react and enact. Suicide is very much real in the United States, but behavioral health issues, particularly in the United States, holds a stigma and negative connotation to it, and this film partially deals with that. This film is worth a watch, particularly those who are experiencing these thoughts and want to see how to instill some glimpse of optimism.
For those experiencing these thoughts, please call 988/911 or text 741741. In Fringe Fiction’s opinion, 741741 may be better as chatting on 988 hasn’t been too helpful.
