With the plethora of zombie horror movies since the popularity of the remake of Zack Snyder‘s Dawn of the Dead and Danny Boyle‘s 28 Days Later, unfortunately, most of them are B-movies or fodder at best. There hasn’t been a decent serious zombie movie until I saw this one recently. This movie is short by movie standards, but through some above-average acting and cinematography, this German zombie horror film more than made up for it.
Cast
Michael Fuith stars as Michael, an EMT. Gabi, Michael’s girlfriend, is played by Anna Graczyk. Theo Trebs stars as Harper, the teenage handiworker. These three are the main protagonists in this film.
Plot
Upon arrival in Berlin, Michael attempts to find Gabi, his ex-girlfriend, in the apartment complex. However, a virus has come upon the city, and infected people become rabid zombies, foaming at the mouth, and infecting others with their bite. He meets a young handiworker by the name of Harper, and together, they barricade themselves in the apartment complex. As each day progresses, food and medicine dwindle. Survival, despair and desolation as the people within the apartment complex attempt to cope and escape.
Review
This movie echoed the desolation and despair of Dawn of the Dead, but it added its own twist — a love story. The focus on added to the character development of both protagonists, and there was a bond to them both as they continuously faced the zombie threat. The younger audience can relate to Harper, and the older audience can relate to Michael as he tries to find his ex-girlfriend through the zombie infestation. The romantic element between Michael and Gabi added an extra dimension to this zombie horror film. Throughout the film, when action was present, it was quite intense and made the movie seemed longer than an hour.
Verdict (Out of 10)
Overall, I give this movie an 8.8 out of 10. It could have been longer, and this film is just a bit short of Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead.
